A book of illustrated lyrics that Joni Mitchell published by hand as a gift for friends in 1971 will be re-published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt on October 22. Morning Glory on the Vine: Early Songs and Drawings will feature reproductions of Mitchell’s handwritten lyrics and poems, and over thirty watercolors from the 1971 edition. It will also feature several additional works that Mitchell intended to include at the time, as well as a new introduction penned by Mitchell herself, according to the folk legend’s website.
Mitchell’s paintings include landscapes, still-lifes, portraits of friends, self portraits, and abstracts. Lyrics include those for her Ladies of the Canyon single “Big Yellow Taxi” and Blue song “Carey.” Back in ’71, Mitchell crafted 100 copies of the book, then titled Morning Glory on the Vine, numbered and signed each copy, and handwrote notes for each recipient. The reissue will presumably not include handwritten notes for each reader, though one can dream.
