Back in April, The-Dream shared the lyric video for his single “Black,” a clip that cut together news footage of several activists, including fist-raising Olympians John Carlos and Tommie Smith, gay politician Harvey Milk, and Russian political punks Pussy Riot. Now the man born Terius Nash returns with a proper clip for the song that continues in the all-inclusive, powerful vein of its predecessor. Here, The-Dream is shown in the midst of a shanty town, surrounded by marchers carrying signs for a number of movements, including Occupy Wall Street and supporters of a free Ukraine, as well as people from all over the world bearing their countries flags. (Also, in a brief NSFW moment, a topless woman runs by with a message about political rape written on her body.) They’re all marching against a nameless, white military force, while The-Dream sings his anthem about inequality, name-checking both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Marvin Gaye. “Black” suggests a much more conscious turn after the sexified IV Play, which he’ll follow up sometime this year with his sixth album.
