Just a day after delivering an epic rendition of “Stay With Me” with Mary J. Blige at New York City’s famed Apollo Theater, Sam Smith stopped by The Late Show With David Letterman to perform the Top 10 single from his debut album, In the Lonely Hour. Like his Saturday Night Live performance in late March, the 22-year-old Englishman was backed by a small gospel choir, though this time Smith was much more comfortable in front of the studio audience, adding more of an emotional punch to the song about a brief love affair. Letterman seemed visibly wowed, asking Smith, “You’ve done this before, right? Just singing. Keep at it!” while Smith humbly joked that it was his first time performing at all. Enjoy it up top.
