Watch Yo La Tengo Play With Old Pal Fred Armisen on ‘Fallon’

Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan on 'Fallon'

“One of the most beloved bands in indie rock,” Late Night host Jimmy Fallon called Yo La Tengo last night, and you won’t find any argument here. Formed around the married couple of Georgia Hubley and Ira Kaplan along with bass player James McNew, the New Jersey group has been putting out great albums of noise-seared tunefulness so consistently you might’ve taken them for granted. Let their TV performance last night jolt you to attention for their excellent new record Fade.

There was Kaplan’s arms-flailing guitar “resisting the flow” in a three-drum take on opener “Ohm,” bolstered by Portlandia star Fred Armisen (whose band Trenchmouth, owners of one our 40 Weirdest Post-‘Nevermind’ Major-Label Albums, recently played with Yo La Tengo over Hanukkah). And as a Web exclusive, Yo La Tengo showed their gentle, folky side in a tender rendition of the new LP’s loving “I’ll Be Around.” Plenty of belovedness to go around in these clips.
