VH1’s annual Divas special aired Sunday night (December 17), and among the usual lineup of R&B staples (Kelly Rowland, Keri Hilson, Brandy), American Idols (Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, and host Adam Lambert), and former Disney Channel stars (Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato), indie rock was well represented by the presence of Metric. Emily Haines and company treated the audience to “Breathing Underwater” — one of SPIN’s Best Songs of 2012 — off of their new album Synthetica, one of SPIN’s Best Albums of 2012. Thanks to the performance, Metric added at least one new high-profile fan: This morning, Rihanna tweeted lyrics from “Breathing Underwater.”
The legacies of Whitney Houston and Donna Summer took center stage at the tribute-heavy Divas 2012 concert, but Metric found time to pay homage to another of the most influential female-fronted bands of all time: Blondie. With black and white parallel lines as a backdrop, Metric performed a loyal rendition of “Heart of Glass.” Haines even donned a gold-sequined dress that wouldn’t seem out of place in Debbie Harry’s closet.
