Any band that’s ever Krazy-glued deliriously snotty melodies to chainsaw guitar owes the Buzzcocks a debt — including the Buzzcocks, who have gone through various incarnations since forming in Bolton, England, during the first wave of English punk. The current lineup of the band got the chance to repay some of what’s owed on May 25 in Manchester, England, when original frontman Howard Devoto, who helped the beloved group find its spiky wings, performed with the Buzzcocks for the first time in 33 years (via Slicing Up Eyeballs).
Devoto, who had left the Buzzcocks to form Magazine, played the entirety of the band’s 1977 EP Spiral Scratch, as well as a cover of the Trogg’s garage-rock rabble-rouser “I Can’t Control Myself.” It wasn’t the tightest performance the band has ever given, but it might have been the sweetest.
