Surprise! Taylor Swift’s Next Album Is About Heartbreak

Taylor Swift has vowed to continue developing her creative versatility, tackling topics as diverse as the slow recovery process in Haiti, the African debt crisis, and the ongoing U.S. recession on her next album. Totally kidding, she’s just going to write about her love life.

In a new Vogue cover story (via the AP, who bothered to read the January 24 issue before the rest of us), the 22-year-old singer-songwriter surprises nobody by revealing her fourth album is about a romance gone bad. “There’s just been this earth-shattering, not recent, but absolute crash-and-burn heartbreak, and that will turn out to be what the next album is about,” she told the magazine. “The only way that I can feel better about myself — pull myself out of that awful pain of losing someone — is writing songs about it to get some sort of clarity.”

Ready for another shocker? Swift’s still talking about how her middle school years were awkward because she was an aspiring starlet rather than a regular ol’ kid (she left school at 16 to be a musical pro, so her painful academic memories halt there). “Having a hobby that’s different from everyone else’s? Awkward. Singing the national anthem on weekends instead of going to sleepovers? More awkward. Braces? Awkward.” You’d think winning a truckload of Grammys, selling out arenas, and nearly single-handedly turning the nation against Kanye West would allay some of that, but nope!

Since Swift has already musically live-blogged her romances with Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, and John Mayer, the gossip world is betting the follow-up to 2010’s Speak Now is about her whirlwind relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal. But she tells Vogue she’s not currently attached. “I got nothing going on! I just don’t really feel like dating. I really have this great life right now, and I’m not sad and I’m not crying this Christmas, so I am really stoked about that.” Vogue, of course, inquires whether she was weepy last Xmas. The response: “I am not gonna go into it! It’s a sad story!” We’ll just await the next album for the details, then!
