Ford & Lopatin, ‘Channel Pressure’ (Mexican Summer)

Last year, Daniel Lopatin’s playfully caustic solo noise project Oneohtrix Point Never earned minor acclaim, as did Games, his just-as-mischievous pop group with Tigercity’s Joel Ford. Now he and Ford present a concept albumof puffy-shoulder keytar pop (supposedly about the year 2082?) that would give Alan Parsons and Mr. Roboto pause. At times, F&L rival Ariel Pink for eccentric sonic pastiche, while there’s enough elasticity in “Too Much Midi (Please Forgive Me)” to hold up an entire generation’s leg warmers. Meanwhile, Babyface-quoting slow jam “Joey Rogers” is meticulously concocted fun no matter what century.
