LCD Soundsystem Announce Final Show in NYC
James Murphy's band playing farewell gig at Madison Square Garden on April 2.
After announcing his intention to break up LCD Soundsystem last year, frontman James Murphy has revealed details of the group’s last show – and it looks like they’ll be going out on a high note.
LCD will be headlining New York’s Madison Square Garden on April 2 with a three hour party, featuring “stuff we’ve never played before and going out with a bang,” Murphy posted on their website. Murphy has also asked fans to come dressed for the occasion in black and white.
“If it’s a funeral, let’s have the best funeral ever!!!,” the post reads.
Back in November, SPIN spoke with Murphy about the band’s last performance, and he originally didn’t intend the bash to be a celebratory blow out like the Band’s iconic Last Waltz. “It’s against my nature to have such a thing, but I don’t know,” he said. “Maybe a big show in New York but it’s not the way I think. I’d like to play a show and later be like, ‘That’s the last one.’ Otherwise it’s like, ‘This is the last one, this better be the best I’ve ever hit this chord, this one better be better.”
Murphy, who is breaking up LCD so he can focus on other musical projects, also revealed that he didn’t feel pressure over the last show – mostly because he always feels anxious when it comes to recording or performing. “I can’t feel more pressure than I feel,” he said. “The pressure to make a record I’m proud of, the pressure to play a show that I can hold my head up after that’s enough.I’ll argue that that’s as much pressure as a person making music can take. It being the last show or any show – I feel the same amount of pressure, which is why I don’t get scared playing the Hollywood Bowl or why I don’t get scared playing before Jay-Z. I’m not scared because I’m scared all the time.”
