HEAR IT: Amy Winehouse Returns with New Cover!
Listen to the oft-troubled singer's new version of Lesley Gore's classic "It's My Party."
It’s no secret that Amy Winehouse has had a very troubled past few years (from her battles with addiction to a recent divorce), but the British singer looks to be righting her ship. She’s reportedly been at work on her third record, and now she has dropped a cover of Lesley Gore’s 1963 classic “It’s My Party.” Hear it here.
The track, produced by Back to Black producer Mark Ronson, will appear on the Quincy Jones-curated album Q: Soul Bossa Nostra, which collects covers by Akon, Usher, and others. (The record is due out later this year.) Winehouse and Ronson’s version stays true to Gore’s original, with Motown-style back-up vocals, hot brass stabs, and Winehouse’s strong, husky vocal delivery.
As SPIN previously reported, Jones had originally commissioned Winehouse to cover Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me.” But after waiting a year to hear her finished version, Jones rescinded his offer to include her on the compilation. It appears Winehouse has returned to Jones’ good graces with this cover of “It’s My Party.”
