Gorillaz Plan to Release New Album by Christmas

Gorillaz have spent the past year on the road, but that hasn’t stopped frontman Damon Albarn from working on the cartoon group’s next record.

In an interview with NME (via Gorillaz News), Albarn says he hopes to release a new record before Christmas. “It’s a studio album made in hotel rooms across America,” he says.

Albarn doesn’t need a full-blown studio to cut the disc — he’s recorded the music on his iPad. “I hope I’ll be making the first record [on it],” he says. “Which is ironic, being the sort of technophobe and Luddite that I am. But I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I’ve made a completely different kind of record.”

As for the sonic vibe, Albarn says the album is more “American-sounding” and a departure from his Blur days: “It sounds like an English voice that has been put through a vocoder of America.”

New Gorillaz music isn’t the only thing up Albarn’s sleeve. As SPIN previously reported, the singer has formed a new group with Flea and afro beat drummer Tony Allen. “[We’re] three-quarters of the way through; I need to get this finished,” Albarn said.
