Javelin, ‘No Mas’ (Luaka Bop)

Sampledelic cousins Tom van Buskirk and George Langford, have their work cut out on this debut album, trying to create distinctive 21st-century pastiches in a field that’s as jumbled and crowded as an actual collage. Madlib playfully grabs from all genres, Girl Talk does it with prodigal density, Panda Bear overlays his samples with resonant songcraft, and upstarts Malachai get grit under their nails. Full of arcade-game blips and dusty funk grooves (see the winsome “Intervales Theme” and the roller-rink disco of “Tell Me, What Will It Be?”), No Mas is frivolous fun, but the grating chirp-rap of “Oh! Centra” feels childish more than childlike.
