DJ AM, a.k.a. Adam Goldstein, had eight undigested OxyContin pills in his stomach, and a ninth in his mouth, when police discovered his body August 28 in New York City, a law enforcement source told People. This finding suggests he swallowed the pills quickly in a possible suicide attempt.
“He wanted to die,” said the source. “He was going unconscious when he took the last one. He didn’t even swallow it.”
As previously reported, a crack pipe and bag of crack cocaine were discovered on Goldstein’s lifeless body.
According to People‘s source, the DJ had barricaded himself in his apartment, blocking the doors with mirrors, before his death. When police forced entry they found a Valentine’s Day card from his ex-girlfriend, model Hayley Wood, surrounded by six pictures of Wood and AM together. Those close to the DJ had speculated that a recent break-up between the couple had led to his overdose, but Wood has stated that the two were still together at the time of his death.
A private memorial service is scheduled for the DJ Thursday at the Hollywood Palladium, a Los Angeles nightclub where Goldstein frequently performed. In October of 2008, less than a month after narrowly surviving a fiery plane crash with Travis Barker, Goldstein returned to the stage at the Palladium, spinning for friend Jay-Z.
Thursday’s memorial will be held in the style of an anonymous 12-step meeting of the kind AM might have attended in his road to sobriety, which led to eleven drug-free years prior to his death.
“Adam’s friends both from his life in recovery, as well as those from other areas of his life are welcome,” the invite reads. “We ask only that everyone adhere to the tradition of anonymity and let what they hear there, and who they see there, stay there.”
