Can Def Jam president Jay-Z make diminutive British rapper Lady Sovereign a stateside success? We’ve got an answer, “Love Me or Hate Me,” the newest track to surface from Sov’s forthcoming Def Jam debut, Public Warning, due out in October. Leaked today, “Love Me” has the biggest hook Sov’s dropped to date, punctuated with a bratty declaration: “If you love me, then ‘Thank youuu!’ If you hate me, then ‘Fuck you!'” With an electro-fueled groove from NYC’s Dr. Luke and verses delivered at a speed far slower than Sov’s usual spitfire pace, “Love Me” feels a little like old school Salt-n-Pepa, and we mean that in the best way possible. But is she, as she raps in the intro, “officially the biggest midget in the game”? You decide.
