Watch Ty Segall Slay the 'Doctor' on 'Letterman'

The joke is that CBS's bread-and-butter audience, the Baby Boomers, must not make it to the musical guests on the Late Show with David Letterman, because why else would that show's bookers go to such great lengths to prove they know what the kids are into. Last night, for instance, you had to stay awake through interviews with sitcom showrunner Ricky Gervais (The Office) and sitcom star Simon Helberg (The Big Bang Theory) to witness Bay Area garage-punk dynamo Ty Segall summarily thrash the fuck out on SPIN Essential Twins cut "You're the Doctor." After just a few epileptic minutes, the feedback-heavy chaos screeched to a halt with a plea from Segall to still-conscious America: "GO VOTE!" Letterman, for all his 65 years and perhaps not knowing what to make of it, bemusedly quipped "Remember kids, don't neglect your studies," and closed the show.

Hear Ad-Rock's Music for a Short Film About Amtrak

Beastie Boys' Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz contiues his creep back into the spotlight with a music credit on a new short film produced for the New York Times. From Jacob Krupnick, featuring still photographs by Pieter Hugo, Off the Rails is a four-minute look at the struggling neighborhoods that underline Amtrak's stretch between New York and Washington, D.C., set to the kind of jazzy instrumental interludes tucked into every Beastie Boys album. As scenes of urban decay flash onscreen, clanking meringue percussion invites a shuffling sax and a throbbing bass heartbeat. Just for a moment, as the train rolls down the tracks, the music drops out and a weathered old man seated outside a storefront rasps the opening lines of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle.""I'm the brother of Jesus Christ, the son of God, I believe," he says.

Cat Power's European Tour Won't Be Canceled After All

Whether Cat Power's 2012 tour would make it overseas became unclear on Tuesday (October 30) when Chan Marshall tweeted that "bankruptcy" and her "health struggle with angioedema" might halt more than a dozen European dates. Two days later, in another all-caps message posted to Twitter, Marshall confirmed that the show will indeed go on abroad, but without the tour's current stage design.EUROPEAN TOUR IS ON.WITHOUT STAGE PRESENTATION.HARD MONEY WASTED. #GOODBYE #GORILLA instagr.am/p/Rf1aT0m3Vl/— chan marshall (@CATPOWER) November 1, 2012 The gorilla hashtag refers to the roaring simian backdrop Marshall's toured with so far, which appeared in a photo attached to the tweet (shown above). Not that the newly ebullient indie-rock icon needs the stage dressing.

Preview Lana Del Rey's New Songs From 'Paradise' Re-Release

Listen before you leap: The eight new tracks recorded for Lana Del Rey's Born to Die: Paradise November re-release have hit the web in a tidy album sampler of minute-and-a-half-long previews. Like what we've heard already in "Ride," "Body Electric," and "Blue Velvet," this latest batch distills the original album's successes into same-sounding songs that, for the most part, put the singer in her lower registers for haunting, downtempo ballads. That's not a bad thing.

Die Antwoord Terrorize Lady Gaga in Controversial 'Fatty Boom Boom' Video

Like the elephants of their native South Africa, Die Antwoord never forget. Back in March the Zef rappers alleged to MTV Canada that their former label Interscope approached them to open on tour for Lady Gaga, an offer they declined, saying, "um, no don’t worry about it, no thanks." Ninja further qualified the decision, commenting: “We like making pop music, but we like making hardcore music at the same time, mixing them, but they’ve got, like, soul. It’s not like weak, superficial shit. You know?”That seemed to put the issue to rest, but only for a time, as the hip-hop collective have rekindled their Mother Monster beef with yet another controversy-skirting video, this time for "Fatty Boom Boom," the latest Ten$ion single.

Have You Seen J Mascis' Missing Guitar?

And this is why we can't have nice things. Dinosaur Jr. guitarist J Mascis says he was robbed of his signature white Squier Jazzmaster at WOW Hall in Eugene, Oregon, supporting SPIN Essential album I Bet on Sky last Wednesday. In a Facebook post published on Friday (October 13), Dinosaur Jr. asked fans for any information about the guitar's disappearance and listed its distinguishing features:"Some characteristics that make this guitar u nique: there is a dent in the neck, the pickups have no screws as they usually do and the action is currently set high. The guitar was in a soft gig bag. Please contact band@dinosaurjr.com or call 303-998-0001 if you have any information about this guitar."The comments section of that post points to the lax security at the venue where the theft took place.

Watch Andrew W.K. Pretend to Electrocute Magician David Blaine

"Illusionist" David Blaine, tired that no one was paying attention, strapped on an old-timey divers' suit and climbed atop a podium in Manhattan this weekend to affect an impression of those static electricty globes that were popular in the '80s. Someone paid unwitting Brony mascot Andrew W.K. to be there, and so he was, calling it "the party-est thing I've ever done!" Then the white-shirted rocker pretended to send million-volt electric shocks to Blaine via Tesla coil and keyboard while an audience feigned as much enthusiasm as one can for an act that's been done before (by MythBusters! Adam Savage, no less), while standing in a niggling October drizzle. Pharrell showed up to, too.For those who haven't seen The Prestige or been to an educational science museum, you can watch videos of both musicians flipping the switch on the very content and comfortable-looking magician below.

Coldplay's 'Hurts Like Heaven' Video Doubles as 'Mylo Xyloto' Comic Book Trailer

Chris Martin never did convincingly explain what Mylo Xyloto means. Something to do with xylophones and toes, he offered the New York Times last year. But Coldplay are getting a second chance at making sense of their 2011 album title with a six-part comic book series, published in early 2013 by Matt Groening's imprint Bongo Comics Group.
