REVIEWSWalter Meego, ‘Voyage’

Voyage
Critical Mass

by Shannon Zimmerman

The debut album from this pop-rock duo comes so frontloaded with carbonated keepers (especially the spastic gurgles of "Girls" and liquefied beats of "Forever") that the album's back half can't help but sag. Still, you know you're in the presence of real ingenuity when the synth-drenched "Lost" and would-be power ballad "Baby Please" seem like relative lowlights simply because they rework excellent ideas better executed earlier on the album. But that tack, as well as a wide-eyed embrace of bubblegum disposability, gives these danceable ditties a distinctive sonic and thematic craftiness.
