The Virgins, ‘The Virgins’ (Atlantic)

By: David Marchese // June 25, 2008

Gossip Girl’s got nothing on this. Over 38 taut minutes, these New York kids reflect the mirror-ball gleam of primo INXS and Emotional Rescue–era Rolling Stones onto the lives of today’s young, rich, and wasted. If “She’s Expensive” didn’t slink along so suavely on a skittering high-hat and burbling bass groove, if “Fernando Pando” didn’t perfectly capture low-lit hedonism and morning-after regret, if every damn song didn’t have an such a stylish chorus, The Virgins might draw some jealous sneers. But they do-so it doesn’t.
