Various Artists, ‘Rave on Buddy Holly’ (Fantasy/Concord)

Rock’n’roll pioneer Buddy Holly was no stodgy purist, an idea the best of this all-star tribute adopts gracefully. Florence and the Machine’s slinky, horn-spiced “Not Fade Away” seduces, Kid Rock’s retro-soul “Well All Right” grooves brawnily, Justin Townes Earle’s blue-collar “Maybe Baby” rollicks, and Lou Reed’s psyched-out “Peggy Sue” floats downstream through orchestral fuzz. Modest Mouse’s “That’ll Be the Day” goes a twitch too far, but then there’s Cee Lo Green ?ebulliently belting out “(You’re So Square) Baby, I Don’t Care,” which is so good it’ll give you hiccups.
