The Psychic Paramount, ‘II’ (No Quarter)

This New York trio’s 2005 debut boasted instrumental prowess worthy of late-’70s experimental legends This Heat in a post-rock scene where such musculature was frowned upon. Six years later, the group dynamics remain unchanged. Drew St. Ivany’s guitar strings blaze like magma spumes (see the stratospheric “N5”), Ben Armstrong’s bass glowers, and on the furious “N6,” Jeff Conaway’s drums are as dizzying and precise as helicopter blades. But II also gives the music some breathing room — “DDB” even runs down some Miles Davis voodoo.
