REVIEWSPhoenix, ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Remix Collection)’

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Remix Collection)
Critical Mass
Label: Loyaute/Glassnote

by Jon Young

Phoenix's wistful, winning fourth album dramatically raised the French quartet's visibility, and inspired this 15-cut companion set celebrating and exploiting their breakthrough. The lesser versions tweak the band's sound incrementally, upping the electronica quotient or emphasizing their poignant pop. More memorable tracks rework the material so extensively that they should be called covers, not remixes: the Soft Pack's "Fences" is a glorious outburst of snarling garage rock; Chairlift give the same song a sleepy, melancholic drift; and Animal Collective's "Love Like a Sunset" gets spacey and anxiety-inducing at once.
