The Jealous Girlfriends, 'The Jealous Girlfriends' (Good Fences)

Remember when you fell in (and out of) love with Mazzy Star?

This promising Brooklyn band's first full-length begins and ends with terrifically melancholy songs driven by Holly Miranda's smoky voice, which compensates for some otherwise timidly shoegazey moments. But when guitarist Josh Abbott steps to the mic, things get more problematic: "How Now" owes more than a little to Snow Patrol, and the new-wavey "The Pink Wig to My Salieri" starts strong but never takes off. That's true of The Jealous Girlfriends overall -- it stuns occasionally (like the undeniably Fiona Apple–esque "Organs on the Kitchen Floor") but seems too content with a gauzy crawl.
