Dennis Coffey, ‘Dennis Coffey’ (Strut)

Detroit studio guitarist Dennis Coffey stood in the shadows of Motown for decades, lending his ferocious, fuzzed-out skills to the Temptations’ “Cloud Nine,” Edwin Starr’s “War,” and countless others. For this comeback, his stinging six-string takes center stage, assisted by savvy guests: Mayer Hawthorne drizzles honeyed soul atop “All Your Goodies Are Gone,” while the Dirtbombs’ Mick Collins and Detroit Cobras’ Rachel Nagy bring earthy grit to “I Bet You.” But Coffey is the star, and on tracks like “Plutonius” and “Space Traveller,” his monstrously psychedelic groove still kills.
