SPIN Exclusive: Greg Dulli, Apollonia Cover Prince's "When Doves Cry"
For this summer's 25th anniversary of Prince's classic movie and album Purple Rain, SPIN is excited to announce the release of Purplish Rain, a tribute album made up of nine tracks commissioned by the editors of SPIN.
One very special note: Among the nine songs is a version of "When Doves Cry" performed by the Twilight Singers, featuring Apollonia, who costarred with Prince in the movie, and Greg Dulli -- check out SPIN.com's exclusive stream of the track below!
The entire album will be available as a free download for SPIN magazine readers and subscribers via SPIN.com/prince starting June 23. (Return to the site on that date for instructions about how to get your free download.)
Purplish Rain was produced to accompany the July cover story, an oral history of Purple Rain, for which contributing writer Brian Raftery spoke to most of the key people involved in the creation of the movie and album.
While being interviewed for the cover story, Apollonia mentioned that she had performed Prince songs with Greg Dulli, the ex-Afghan Whigs frontman who's also recorded with Mark Lanegan as the Gutter Twins. She then contacted Dulli about covering a Prince track for SPIN's tribute.
"It was a fun challenge," says Dulli. "I can guarantee you that what we do sounds nothing like what you expect. The only thing you'll recognize is the lyrics."

Make a comp of Prince covers that Prince hated, like Refused doing "Let's Go Crazy" or Foo Fighers' "Darling Nikki." Can't wait to read the cover story!
wow..prince hated the foo fighters version? he must be out of his mind (or losing touch with reality (haaaa!!!!!)
I remember reading that Prince had not heard the Foo Fighters' version of "Darling Nikki," with him insisting that he only listened to his own music. So, I was blown away that he covered "Best Of You" by the Foo Fighters' during the Superbowl XLI halftime show.
Sounds cool!
Crazy to think that a whole generation is out there who don't really know Prince. Maybe this can help bridge the gap???
That's possibly the saddest statement in tha world!!!! so that is what it sounds like when doves cry! :(
oh christ ...i want to cry. i cannot imagine prince sanctioning this. that, a'hem, "cover" of 'when doves cry' is abhorrent. and to boot...it's the music from the movie halloween! WWWWWTTTTFFFFF???. Apollonia can't sing her way out of a paper bag, and she never could. it's obvious her involvement was gratuitous. her vocal is tucked way down in the mix because they know themselevs she sucks. it's nothing more than a marketing gimmick. they should be ashamed of themselves. what's next a cover of 'litte red corvette' by Devo?
Don't think I will buy it, I'll stick with the original.
Same here.
I'm interested in hearing the Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings cover of "Take Me With U". The Twilight Singers cover of "When Doves Cry" was pretty much what I expected, but I really like the Twilight Singers and I also like it when a band does their own interpretation of a song rather than just a faithful reproduction of it. Anyone with minimal talent can make an auditory xerox of a song...that's really just one step above Karaoke or playing Rock Band. It takes a bit more talent to re-imagine a song and make it your own and especially so when the song is originally by a genius like Prince.
There are a few really good tribute albums out there..."Exit Music: Songs for Radioheads" has some good covers...some misses, too, but some really interesting interpretations. Shawn Lee's "No Surprises" and Mark Ronson's "Just" are two gems from that one. "For The Masses" is a Depeche Mode tribute album with songs by The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Rabbit In The Moon, and Hooverphonic, among others.
And Devo covering "Little Red Corvette" would freakin' RULE!
I understand being a Prince purist and having your own tastes in music, but disliking something does not automatically make it garbage. Unless it's prefab prepube music like Miley Cyrus or the Jonas Brothers or talentless noise pollution like Nickelback or Disturbed, et al. That's garbage because...well...because it just is.
True that last part.
It takes more energy 2 hate. Than 2 love. Ya Dig!!!!
God awful. they should be ashamed
Thumbs up for a cool cover. I've heard way worse and if this is free with the mag then I'll totally be downloading it.
Wow, did Apollonia sleep with Dulli 2 get this gig, 2? Can u say Sux much?
We actually assembled a Purple Rain Tribute podcast (http://coveredthat.com) a few weeks ago using covers from the following artists:
Let’s Go Crazy - Clas Yngstrøm & Sky High
Take Me With You - Marshall Crenshaw
Darling Nikki - Foo Fighters
When Doves Cry - Patti Smith
I Would Die 4 U - Richard Swift
Baby I’m A Star - Buddy Miles
Purple Rain (live) - Martin Sexton
Really looking forward to the Dap-Kings track.

I am a fan of multiple forms of music...I am a fan of both Prince and Greg Dulli's work (more of an Afgan Wigs fan...than is more recent work...but still a fan).
I would say Greg's version was exactly what I expected....this is a very dark song that Prince made...Greg made it the song even darker....which is Geg's specialty.
I agree with previous posts...Apollonia really does not offer much to the song...but if you read the Spin article...she offered insight to Prince's inspiration for the song...which help Greg understand how to shape his version of the song. I guess her insight was enough to warrant a cameo background vocal.
P.S. Tone'd...got a laugh out of your post. Now if there was a better way to type Prince's way of using "I"....maybe .....<0>....but it is not the same without the eyelashes on it!
like Christmas in June...thanks SPIN!
What the...
You all better recognize Greg Dulli and the Twilight Singers. Dulli has been paying tribute to Prince since his days with the Afghan Whigs. I would suggest taking a listen to some of his previous stuff, you will dig it.
U know we do LUV THE PRINCE ! U can not cover him my dear !
Umm... this is hideous. This sounds like a group of people lost in the desert, bored, with no food, trying to amuse themselves.
This is sounds like something that Ben Stiller's Zoolander character would walk down the runway to.
I think my ears are bleeding.
As an avid Prince fan, this song does no justice to a classic tune, and ought not see the light of day.
Guys, I'm serious. This is just my opinion, to which I'm entitled... but honestly. Are you SERIOUS with this version??
This is disgustingly horrible. "Animals stirke curious poses.." Yo! These two singing together sound like a bunch of animals. I don't care what ANYONE says. This is garbage.
Bravo. Pleasantly satisfied with this song. Great way to change it up and add Paisley motifs (some of which are underlying and will be evident upon multiple listens).
Thanks Greg and Appolonia.
Peace
Joe
This is what it sounds like when the vocals are mixed too high.
