Laura Marling has shown growing confidence on each of the English singer and songwriter's albums, most recently 2011's A Creature I Don't Know, which brought her into dialogue with lions of '70s folk (Cohen, Mitchell, Sandy Denny). "Where Can I Go?," the first single from upcoming follow-up Once I Was an Eagle — due out on May 28 via Ribbon Music — is her most assured yet. Little more than acoustic guitars, weeping organ, and gentle percussion, it's a brisk and rawly communicative song that puts Marling's increasingly rich vocals in the foreground. With her longtime producer Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon), she addresses the perennial battle of the sexes with a simplicity that's as old as Bob Dylan or Nick Drake, but an entrancing presence all her own.
