Exclusive: New Motion City Soundtrack Song

Motion City Soundtrack
Motion City Soundtrack

My Dinosaur Life, the new album (and major label debut, due Jan 19) from Minneapolis pop-punk faves Motion City Soundtrack, might just be the first breakout hit of 2010. How do we know? Our November premiere of "Her Words Destroyed My Planet" was one of the most popular streams we posted in all of 2009!

Now, enjoy yet another cut from the Mark Hoppus-produced, SPIN-approved album: "A Lifeless Ordinary (Need a Little Help)." Stream the track below!

We've also got video of the band telling the story behind the song. Watch them talk about the recording session (during which they had to work around drummer Tony Thaxton's broken arm), and hear frontman Justin Pierre's explanation of the tune's meaning -- and how it's not related to the 1997 Danny Boyle film, A Life Less Ordinary.

I LOVE all three songs they have released so far. On each one, the first listen I didn't like too much, but after a few more listens I fell in love with each one of these songs! I am so stoked to hear the rest of the songs off MDL! Just one more week!

it's not a new sound at all... when i first heard the new tracks i was like 'bonus, it's like i am the movie and commit this to memory'. i totally agree with the guy below me, the last record was okay i guess but i think a lot of people heard that one first so now they feel they've changed, when they're just going back to their roots.

why is there people saying there sound changed. from what i have heard on these 3 songs they have released i believe that motion is going back to there old sound from i am the movie and commit this to memory and i for one love that they went back to that sound. even if it kills me was an okay record, a bit overly produced in my opinion compared to there older stuff. but i love these new songs they have and i cannot wait till my dinosaur life comes out.

I like it, and the new sound... But there better be some freaking synths on the rest of the album!

The beauty of being a musician is that they don't have to give a damn about little kiddies that are crying because they changed their sound. Bands mature and find new sounds, it'd be ridiculously boring if they just had the same sound for forever and eternity. I for one think that MCS's new sound is amazing and am happy that they are evolving to a new level of music. They don't need everyone's approval

This is disappointing... I love all of motion city's music before this album, but what I've heard of this new disc sounds completely different- as if they had changed the name of the band and started over. I loved that the music itself used to be quirky, not just the lyrics. This song sounds great, it sounds really well polished and destined to be played a million times on the radio, but that isn't what I think of when I think of Motion City Soundtrack.

I hate be negative like immature kids on the internet, but this is horrible, until it stops for his single solo vocals. That near the end vocals are good, but the chorus and repetitive radio-structure is very disappointed to say the least from MCS's discography.

They don't sound the same. The guy is just pissy. He's referring to Mark Hoppus, though. The Producer of this new album, and Commit This to Memory. He's also the bass player/singer of Blink 182.

I don't know why people are complaining about the moog not being there. Yes, it is a big part of Motion City Soundtrack but you should appreciate the amazing quirky lyrics Justin still as to offer, and the great melodies they come up with. Justin's voice sounds incredible in all three songs. Jesse is on all three of these songs so everyone can just chill out. He even says he is (if you follow him on twitter.) I don't know how some people can say they don't like these songs just because it isn't like I Am The Movie anymore. They have such a great range of songs they can play..from rock, slow piano songs, to just upbeat catchy songs. They just wanted to do what sounded right to them and just go for it, and they definitly DID NOT miss! From hearing these three songs, I have come to the conclusion that Motion City Soundtrack still has it and to me will always be my favorite band no matter what they do. I Can't wait to get my deluxe edition and to hear the rest of these songs which I am sure has moog on them!!

He's on the *gasp* REGULAR piano, everybody. Stop questioning where the **** Jesse is. You can hear it faintly, but Jesse is there.

Guys, Jesse is indeed in every song so far. In this one he's not on the moog. GET OVER IT! He's on the piano and it's very prevalent in the song. In my opinion, it sounds way better than the moog would have. I'm sure moog will be in several songs on the album, don't worry yourselves. Just don't be upset when it's not in every song. When I think of MCS, I don't think about moog anyways. I think of catchy songs and great, simple lyrics.

Well, I was really anti this song at first. Agreed with some of the other comments, thought it was very generic. Although now I think his voice sounds fantastic here and this song really resonates with me trying to do my new years resolutions! Haha. I just rewinded and listened three times in a row. Consider me converted.

I've had this song in my head ever since I first heard it. Love it!

I don't understand all the complaints about it not being "true MCS". Changing musical styles slightly =/= selling out or becoming bad. I'd be hard pressed to find a great band that didn't evolve as they kept making music.

Less than two weeks till the album release, can't wait!

i am definately pumped for this cd, mcs is good no matter what they do because they like a few other great bands dont need to have a "sound" they find a way to create a sound for each and every song that they write, every one is individual and great in its own way, from movie to memory to kills me, they have evolved and continued to write amazing music in my opinion

Wow... are you one of the pricks who started to like them because of the acoustic version of "fell in love without you".
Because this song is quite amazing and can be compared to their old stuff.
And I mean old, old.
Like I am the Movie's content.

I Like. It's not my favorite but it's fun, and that's the point to be fun and catchy. I love MCS and forever will. Nice job boys

this is so generic it kills me.. 'her words' is the only song I like so far, the other two don't even compare.

I definitely like this song more than I liked "Her Words Destroyed My World" but "Disappear" is by far my favorite song so far. Don't get me wrong, "Her Words" is a good song, but it does not sound like MCS at all. But I love the band and support them no matter what they do.

When i first heard Dissapear i thought "oh god, this album's gunna be really different" because for me, Commit This was the best album from them. But i'm in love with Her Words Destroyed My Planet and this band are like Gods to me, they are me in music form and i'll love whatever they do.. i'm buying the album the day it comes out and reckon you lot should too!! Mark's a legend, give the guy some credit, he comes from one of the best bands of all time and worked with them before so just trust him on this one.

I have to agree that the songs seem veyy Jesse shy.
but my favorite new single so far is hands down "disappear"! I love the old MCS vibe it has, more up tempo, a little more agressive tone to it..but again where the hell is jesse up in there? :P
Hope the release goes well boys! Happy New year!
