EXCLUSIVE: Fiery Furnaces Guy Goes Solo

Matthew Friedberger is a busy dude.

The Fiery Furnaces, his art-pop band with his sister Eleanor, are known for being prolific, but the 38-year-old Chicago native has really outdone himself with his new solo project. The aptly-titled Solos is a six album subscription series with one new album arriving every other month from January to November. SPIN.com has an exclusive download of “Meet Me in Miramas,” the first single and title track of the second release in the series, due March 15. Download it below!

Each effort in Matthew’s Solos will highlight one instrument — piano, guitar, organ, double bass, drums, harp. Napoleonette, the first album released in January, focuses on piano; Meet Me in Miramas, as its namesake song proves, is his guitar album.

Over jagged six-string squalls and a minimal bongo beat, Matthew sings typically verbose and playful lyrics on the track. “Damn-a-damn-a-damn-a-damn-a-damn it!”

Oh, and as if that wasn’t enough, dude is also hard at work on another Fiery Furnaces album, the studio follow-up to 2009’s I’m Going Away. After that album is released hopefully Matthew will take a well-deserved nap.
