The Cubical

Who? Liverpool, England's Cubical features Dan Wilson (lead vocals/guitar), Alex Gavaghan (guitar/piano/vocals), Johnny Green (guitar/harmonica), Mark Percy (drums/vocals) and Craig Bell (bass). The band's Great White Lie EP digitally dropped via iTunes earlier this month; their studio full-length debut, the Dave Sardy-produced Poor Man's Disease, is slated for a spring 2008 release on Record Collection.

What's the Deal? Frontman Dan Wilson sings with a gravelly, guttural urgency that recalls Howlin' Wolf, Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits at his most raspy. On "Oh Blessed Be," he even cleans up those throaty edges to do his best Nick Cave. Add to Wilson's distinctive voice the galloping Telecaster twang of Gavaghan and Green, and you get a bluesy garage rock that summons the humid American South. Honestly, the rumble of Great White Lie is enough to make a listener fear divine retribution, hide the children and close the curtains. "We were hearing a lot of American bands who sounded like British bands," Wilson tells SPIN.com. "It took some guys from the north of England to bring back the blues."

Fun Fact? Drummer Mark Percy is a direct descendant of Sir Harry "Hotspur" Percy, who was the great-grandson of Edward the Confessor (a.k.a. King Edward III of England), also the title of a song on the Cubical's forthcoming album. The members of the noble Percy family are the second wealthiest landowners in the U.K. after the Royal Family, but Percy survives off his recording royalties and busking revenue.
