Though Band of Horses principal Ben Bridwell warily confirms speculation regarding the existence of “country leanings” on the band’s sophomore LP Cease to Begin, due Oct. 9 via Sub Pop, the outfit’s newfound southern wash certainly isn’t exemplified with album gem “Is There a Ghost,” and its ethereal lofty plucks and airy vocals. Stepping into a familiar mold, evocative of many standards from BoH’s acclaimed debut Everything All the Time, Bridwell’s “Is There a Ghost” musters thunder via tried and true loud-soft pop dynamics, rolling out a soft reverb drenched riff against his whisper-like vocals, then leaping frets first into thick power-chord rock, bolstered with the heightened volume and strain of the frontman’s oft-emphysema-esque fumes.
