Release Date: April 16
The Skinny: Yeah Yeah Yeahs have been working on their own projects since releasing 2009’s stunning It's Blitz, which SPIN called "the alternative pop album of the decade." Frontwoman Karen O took a stab at bloody avant-opera and Tim Burton love songs; guitarist Nick Zinner wrote symphonies and dressed up as Kurt CoBane. Somehow they synchronized their schedules and found time to record this upcoming fourth album. They premiered new song "Despair" at a Brooklyn Hurricane Sandy benefit last year, which SPIN described as "a spare thumper that recalled Florence and the Machine's 'Dog Days Are Over,' with Karen O singing about wasted days, nights, years, life." You'll have to wait to hear it, though, since that performance seems to be the first in New York City's recent history not to be captured on iPhone video. For now, here's what we know about Mosquito: It's produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek (who's worked on all of the YYYs' albums), Nick Launay, and LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy; it includes a cameo from Kool Keith in his Dr. Octagon persona; and Karen O describes the feel as " kind of raw, kind of chaotic, kind of dreamy."
Worth Noting: The cover, designed by South Korean artist and filmmaker Beomsik Shimbe Shim, is completely batshit. K.G.
