Sad Beck Is Nowhere to Be Found in Ridiculous New “Wow” Video

Just when it looked like Beck might be ready to settle into the weary troubadour persona of Morning Phase and Sea Changehere’s the video for “Wow,” a single from June that features Beck’s first honest-to-God rapping since 2006’s The Information, by my count.

“Wow” draws ideas both from contemporary Top 40 pop and from the looser half of Beck’s own back catalog. The synthesized pan flute sounds that anchor the track bring to mind Justin Bieber’s run of tropical house-inflected 2015 singles, but the free-associative lyrics and layered chorus make Beck’s imprint unmistakeable. The video–featuring flowers with eyeballs, dancing children, and a melting white hand–is pretty great, too.
