Punk History for Sale: X’s Exene Cervenka Is Selling All Her Stuff
Vintage guitars, original art, antique furniture, music memorabilia, and rare records galore
Los Angeles punk rock icon Exene Cervenka is holding an estate sale in which she’s looking to shed instruments, antiques, her own original art, music memorabilia, and other personal items she’s collected over the years. “Calling all Betty Crocker Punk Rockers,” the X singer writes in the listing. “100 years of Americana needs good home. Treasured memories of the past can live on in your hands! Like a small inheritance, but without the squabbling with siblings!”
The Santa Ana, California sale begins Thursday, February 13, and runs four days. Run by Missouri-based vintage specialist Donnaland, day one will be by appointment only, but the rest are open to the public, with line numbers being handed out beginning at 9 a.m. every morning. On those days, the house will be open until 4 p.m., and on Sunday, everything is 50 percent off. There will be a bid box for all guitars owned and/or played by Cervenka.
“She is downsizing and plans on relocating soon,” Donna Knott of Donnaland writes. “This is a multi family sale but the vast majority of the items are from Exene’s lifelong antique and vintage collection. Exene is alive and well and excited about recycling her treasures … This is a very UNIQUE Estate Sale filled with vintage treasures and lifelong collections of a talented artist, poet and musician with a passion for the unusual. It’s a once in a lifetime sale.”
The sale address will be released to the public on 6 p.m. PST Thursday. Among the items listed: vintage jewelry, Victorian clothing, Depression-era glass, alligator bags, toys and dolls, movie posters, old lace and fabric, “religious ephemera and art,” magazines and books, “RECORDS!”, aprons, lamps, curtains, furniture, and “funky” Americana knickknacks. Cervenka once ran an odd memorabilia shop in L.A.’s Silver Lake neighborhood called You’ve Got Bad Taste.
