Prince Flaunts Sizzling New ‘Affair’ on ‘Kimmel’

Prince on 'Kimmel'

“Hear our master calling,” proclaims former Prince bassist André Cymone on “The Dance Electric,” a song written by the Purple One himself for Cymone’s 1985 solo album. Fresh off a stand in Chicago that saw the 54-year-old Minnesota pop trailblazer singing a duet of his Sinéad O’Connor-covered “Nothing Compares 2 U” with American Idol alumna Jennifer Hudson, Prince visited Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night — still fro-less, alas, but still gaudily attired.

Prince and his massive band, complete with horn section, first performed his bluesy, Chicago-slick newest song, an ode to the music that we’ve seen alternately called “RNR Affair” and “Rock’n’Roll Love Affair.” As the credits rolled, they reached back for a faithfully funky version of the Cymone track, which you can watch in part below (Kimmel says a full version should be up on his website eventually — but with the famously Web-averse Prince, who knows?).

And while you’re dancing the dance electric, check out a 26-minute version of Purple Rain‘s “I Would Die 4 U,” as pointed out by the writer Ned Raggett. Now, Prince and his band have been known to jam out songs for a half-hour during rehearsal, including “The Dance Electric.” But this sprawling studio jam is, well, 2 die 4. The master is calling.
