Hot Song: A-Camp’s ’80s Cover
Nina Persson and Co. put their spin on a track by New Wave diva Grace Jones. Listen here!
A-Camp is on a roll. The band — a side project of Cardigans vocalist Nina Persson that also features Persson’s husband Nathan Larson and Niclas Frisk of Atomic Swing — just released a SPIN-approved sophomore album, Colonia, and kicked off an extensive U.S. tour. Now, the mellow indie-pop trio is set to release some new material — or, rather, some new interpretations of old material.
The band’s three-track Covers EP, available June 9 via iTunes, features A-Camp-ified versions of “Us and Them” by Pink Floyd, “Boys Keep Swinging” by David Bowie, and “I’ve Done it Again” by Grace Jones — the last of which is available below.
“We wanted to record some material, and since we, like probably all musicians, nourish a dream of being in a cover band, we decided to just cover some songs we love,” Persson tells SPIN.com.
So what does the effervescent Persson have in common with Jones, the Lady GaGa of the ’70s and ’80s New Wave scene, who was known for her outrageous outfits and severe, androgynous look? An affinity for time travel: On “I’ve Done it Again,” Jones boasts about skipping through time and crossing the Mason-Dixon Line, tripping on LSD, and voting for Roosevelt in 1933. Colonia also embraces the concept of exploring decades and centuries past. “The lyrics made a lot of sense with our Time Bandits/Zelig approach to historical events,” Persson says.
The result is a warm, woozy track that does the original more than enough justice.
But what does Ms. Jones think? “We don’t know if she knows. We sort of don’t think so,” Persson says. “She actually didn’t write it herself, so I’m afraid she’s not even making money off of our version. We hope she would like it, though.”
