After years of playing guitar for Monotonix (an outfit SPIN once called "the most exciting live band in rock'n'roll"), New York-based composer Yonatan Gat took some time to regroup and found himself emboldened by the work of Portuguese drummer Igor Domingues. In October of last year, the duo emerged with a kaleidoscopic single called "Escorpião," which was released under the moniker of Outravez. Now, the full fruits of the pair's collaboration have finally emerged bearing Gat's own name. The Iberian Passage EP, ostensibly named for the European region from which Gat drew inspiration for the project, is composed of only four tracks, but each one is a cosmically minded and punk-grounded improvisational journey. Gat's virtuosic guitar work runs the gamut between Os Mutantes-influenced tropicalia to pure noisy abstraction without ever seeming self-indulgent.
