The New Pornographers, ‘Together’ (Matador)

There are worse ways to start a song than with the jangly, white-funk groove of Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way,” as these Canadian indie rockers do on “The Crash Years,” one of their fifth album’s many record-nerd highlights. (Another: “Your Hands Together,” which gets as close to Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” as Canadian indie rockers are legally allowed). The sharp riffs only occasionally add up to anything with a pulse, but the Pornos have always been bad mathematicians. Archaeology — that’s their subject.
