Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week

Lots of musicians tweet — but all that Twitters is not gold.

That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week — then update your TweetDeck! (Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)

This week’s winners:

  • Florence Welch
    @flo_tweet

    Why You Should Follow: As the voice and brains behind the critically acclaimed indie-soul act Florence and the Machine, Welch lives a charmed life — winning Brit Awards, appearing on magazine covers, and hanging out with Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon in a castle (“he liked my hat and gave me a white rose!”). Follow this gutsy British songstress as she shares her tips for performing (“cocktail o clock, top tip if your feeling tired before a show, a shot of tequila sorts you out. Any more and you are in trouble!!x”), describes her experiences on the road (“back from copenhagen, got lost in christiana, became one with the hippes, ended up in sharks tooth earings and a tupac tshirt …strong x”), and gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse at what it means to be a chart-topping pop star (“Big label bods just arrived at hotel to give me platinum disc, massive shiny suprise!”). She occasionally falls off the Twitter radar for a couple of weeks at a time, but she always remembers to update followers on what she’s been doing once she returns.

    Best Tweet of the Week: “Shooting video today, with blue skinned shangri la ladies, a Viking, A gospel choir, I’m dressed as a kabuki monk…. All in a days work really…x”

  • The Teenagers
    @theteenagers

    Why You Should Follow: This French synth-pop band is known for their joke-y odes to American culture and highly explicit lyrics — so it should come as no surprise that their tweets are full of “lolz” and references to vodka-soaked tampons and breast milk. Whether they’re tweeting about tween culture (“is justin bieber the new miley cyrus? whats his angle? is it only his hair?”), Madonna’s “mangina,” or driving like “sandra bullock circa 1994 speed,” the Teenagers will make you laugh — and sometimes cringe (penis Halloween costumes, anyone?). Expect lots of discussion of Gossip Girl, “Lady Gargoyle’s” style and music choices, strawberry ice cream, and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, as well as plenty of Twitpics and occasional all-French tweets. Bonus points: If you tweet at them, they’ll tweet back — especially if your tweet is “pervy”!

    Best Tweet of the Week: “happy valentine yall!! remember that being single is not a crime. its just sucks ha!”

  • Gorillaz’s Murdoc Niccals
    @MurdocGorillaz

    Why You Should Follow:This fictional bassist — the brainchild of Damon Albarn of Blur and Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of Tank Girl — is currently working on Gorillaz’s third (and final) studio album, Plastic Beach, and getting into plenty of trouble along the way. When he’s not popping pills like candy and getting shot at by evil nemesis Little Jimmy Manson, he’s drinking crates of rum, spinning tunes in DJ booths, and giving vaguely suspicious instructions to his minions (“Oh yeah, the cash. I need it in a brown paper bag in used notes. Really old used notes. Leave it on the old Kong Studios doorstep”). Look out for sneak peaks at upcoming Gorillaz music videos and the podcasts that result when Murdoc hacks into various radio stations around the country.

    Best Tweet of the Week: “Weather today: Grey, doomy & overcast. It was raining Styrofoam all last week too. I wonder what’s on the radio today? Oh yeah. ME!”
