New St. Vincent Record Due in May

Brooklyn resident Annie Clark, a former member of the Polyphonic Spree and Sujfan Stevens’ band, will release her sophomore album, Actors, on May 5 via 4AD. And it appears Clark, whose sharp guitar work, Beatles-like songwriting (she even covered “Dig A Pony” live), and tales of love gone awry dominated her 2007 debut, Marry Me, has found a new influence: vintage films!

Inspired by movies like Sleeping Beauty and The Wizard of Oz, Clark says she started writing the new songs as abbreviated film scores, then built them into full-length tracks. “I wanted to make these songs technicolor animatronic rides.”

Actor was co-produced by Clark and John Congleton (Modest Mouse, Polyphonic Spree), and features woodwind contributions from Hideaki Aomori (Sufjan Stevens) and Alex Sopp (Bjork, Phillip Glass), and additional rhythm work by McKenzie Smith and Paul Alexander of Texan rockers Midlake.

The album’s first single, “Actor Out of Work,” will arrive April 20.

Below, check out Actor‘s cover art. Whew, with a headshot like this, she could land a role in Sleeping Beauty‘s remake.
