Las Vegas rockers the Killers inaugurated the AIDS-fighting (RED)WIRE music service this week, by releasing their new Christmas single, “Joseph, Better You Than Me,” featuring contributions from Neil Tennant of influential electro-pop outfit Pet Shop Boys and piano rock legend Elton John. (Listen to the song below.)

It’s certainly a winning combination, but how did Brandon Flowers and the gang get Sir Elton on board? Well, through a shared love of fine food, of course.

Flowers spoke to NME.com about the collaboration’s origins: “He’s been doing this show called the Red Piano in Las Vegas for a while now, and so every now and then we’ll go see the show and we’ll go have dinner. We’re big admirers of him and his voice and his gift for writing amazing songs…We were writing this Christmas song and we asked him if he wanted to chip in.”

According to Flowers, John wrote the chorus and Tennant penned a few lyrics.

Elton John and the Killers, out to dinner together?Hmm, we wonder what they discussed — perhaps the meaning of “dancer”?
