LISTEN: Big Boi’s Funky New Song

It’s not the entire album, but, hey, it is cause for celebration: OutKast’s Big Boi has debuted the first single from his chronically delayed solo debut, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty.

“Shutterbug,” a heavy, genre-hopping funk jam, has Big Boi showing off the fast-paced and clever rhyming he’s known for. Synths and vocoders are layered throughout, and deep bass bounces the song along. The single is the latest in a string of leaks from the album, which Big Boi first began working on three years ago.

Sir Luscious has been in release-date purgatory since its first scheduled drop date in 2008. Delays plagued the album — which was also expected last summer — but after recently signing with Def Jam, it is now tentatively due a full year later.

And when it does arrive, it will do so with an all-star lineup: Luscious reportedly features guest spots from Raekwon, Mary J. Blige, George Clinton, T.I., and Lil Jon, among others.

OutKast’s other half, Andre 3000, is also involved in the record. According to Gyantunplugged TV, Andre chose “Shutterbug” as Boi’s first single and, reportsRap Basement, will appear on at least three songs.

Despite the album’s delays, Big Boi has had a busy year. He guests on fellow Atlanta native Janelle Monae’s funky single “Tightrope,” and supported President Obama with an inaguration performance.
