Kendrick Lamar Reprises ‘SNL’ Gig With Exquisite ‘Poetic Justice’ on ‘Letterman’

Kendrick Lamar, Poetic Justice, Letterman

Kendrick Lamar continued his victory lap for last year’s nearly impeccable good kid, m.A.A.d city with a typically forceful performance last night on Late Show With David Letterman. SPIN’s SXSW party headliner has already performed a fantastic “Swimming Pools (Drank)” on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, plus ascent-certifying versions of “Swimming Pools (Drank)” and Janet Jackson-sampling “Poetic Justice” on Saturday Night Live. Fresh off the release of a chilling video for the latter song, he meted out “Poetic Justice” stirringly again on Letterman. As on SNL, there was no Drake, let alone live Janet, but there was saxophone. Lamar’s earnest smile when the much-taller Letterman comes out to shake his hand would be worth waiting through an ad for (there isn’t any ad before the video above, though).
