Fucked Up

What? Hardcore has come a long way since Minor Threat frontman Ian McKaye was “Guilty of Being White” back in the ’80s, from the harsh dub excursions of his future project Fugazi to the breakneck glam-thrash of the Blood Brothers. The latest forward-thinkers in the sneakily progressive genre are the insanely prolific (30-plus releases in the last six years!) Canadian collective Fucked Up, who concoct swirling psych odysseys within the scorched larynx of screamer Pink Eyes’ wildly pitched voice.Indie powerhouse Matador — the band’s new label — reissues last year’s epic Year of the Pig EP this week, and is gearing up to drop Fucked Up’s second official full-length, The Chemistry of Common Life, on Oct. 7. You can get a taste of the new record by downloading album track “No Epiphany” below for your listening pleasure.

Who? Fucked Up were founded during early 2001 in Toronto. After several years of releasing a steady stream of 7-inch singles, the group signed to emo touchstone Jade Tree Records to release their first full-length, the critically acclaimed Hidden World, in 2006. Fucked Up signed to Matador this year, with several 7-inches and EPs in the pipeline. Currently, the band consists of Pink Eyes, 10,000 Marbles (guitar), Concentration Camp (guitar), Mustard Gas (bass), and Mr. Jo (drums).

Fun Fact: On Fucked Up’s 2007 Christmas(!) single, David Christmas, the band enlisted supporting vocal duties from such diverse (and, considering Fucked Up’s music, strange) guests as Nelly Furtado and Degrassi: the Next Generation‘s Shenae Grimes.
