Pie Hero: Foo Fighters Play Warm-Up Gig at Pizza Restaurant

Foo Fighters, pizza, surprise concert, secret, video

Pizza and rock’n’roll must go together like cheese and sauce. Fresh off word that Macaulay Culkin has a pizza-themed Velvet Underground cover band, video has emerged of Foo Fighters performing at Rock & Roll Pizza in Moorpark, California. The clip above shows recent SPIN cover star Dave Grohl and co. tearing through “Learn to Fly,” “White Limo,” and “Arlandria,” but according to Setlist.fm the band played 23 songs.

The pepperoni-ready performance came ahead of the Foos’ first full-scale concerts in more than a year. The Wasting Light band plays in Mexico City’s Foro Sol tonight (December 11) and again on December 13, with fellow SPIN profile subjects the National opening. Foo Fighters’ last show was at the October 2012 Global Citizen Forum in New York, where Grohl announced the band would be taking a temporary break.

Foo Fighters haven’t just been downing pizza and beer in the meantime. Grohl, No. 1 on SPIN’s list of the 100 Greatest Drummers in Alternative Music, made his directing debut with the Gold-certified Sound City, when not jamming with the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Joan Jett, Queens of the Stone Age, Zac Brown Band, and Jack Black. Or inducting Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Or talking up Nirvana’s 20th-anniversary In Utero reissue.

Grohl has also been working on the Foo Fighters’ next full-length. In August, the former Nirvana drummer told SPIN the eighth Foo album was already being recorded, on the famed Sound City console, and promised it will involve a “little secret.” If the secret is a music video using the animatronic critters from ’80s Chuck E. Cheese’s rival ShowBiz Pizza, we’re sorry, Mr. Grohl — that happened years ago.
