Mitski‘s new album Be the Cowboy has arrived from Dead Oceans. Produced by longtime collaborator Patrick Hyland, the record comes two years after the beautifully unrelenting Puberty 2, the album that catapulted Mitski Miyawaki to wider recognition as a songwriter. While her lyrics remain as poignant and vibrant as ever, the new album finds Mitski stepping away from herself and creating narratives themed around topics like anxiety and marriage. “When I say cowboy, I’m talking about the Marlboro myth of a cowboy—the very strong, white male identity,” she told NPR. “And so as an Asian woman, I sometimes feel I need to tap into that to achieve things that maybe I don’t believe I can achieve.”

Advance singles “Geyser,” “Nobody,” and “Two Slow Dancers” prove Mitski has done more than just achieve, and moments like the opening organs in “Geyser” and the insatiably catchy disco hook of “Nobody” demonstrate the growth in her production. “I think it’s a very feminine album,” she told The Line of Best Fit. “There can be something incredibly violent about being a woman and having desires as a woman–not so nice, not so soft… When I say ‘feminine album’ those words make it sound soft, but I mean feminine in the real way.” Listen to Be the Cowboy below.
