At this point in their career, Metallica have seen just about everything — at least that’s what they thought. At last Saturday’s show in Brazil, Metallica fan Joice M. Figueiró literally gave birth while the band performed “Enter Sandman” at the Estádio Couto Pereira. Figueiró said she began having contractions as Metallica started their set. Since she and her husband had tickets for the show for nearly three years, they decided to stay (with the approval of her doctor). Figueiró made it to “Enter Sandman” before heading to the venue’s medical area, where her newborn was delivered.

“Luan Figueiró came into the world on 05/07/2022 at 23:15 shaking all the metal structures,” Figueiró wrote in an Instagram post. She did joke that she was considering naming him “James Ulrich” in honor of Metallica members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.

Not long after the show, Figueiró got a congratulatory phone call from Hetfield, who had been told of the news and called to check in on the health of the new mom and her newborn.

“This is James from Metallica,” Hetfield said as Figueiró gasped, “Oh my god!”

“It was a blur. It all happened so fast,” Figueiró told The Washington Post. “Since it wasn’t planned, I was scared that the medical team wouldn’t be ready. But there’s also the feeling of being able to tell people that this happened because Metallica is one of the bands we love the most.”

Metallica are performs tonight (May 12) at the Estádio do Mineirāo in Belo Horizonte, Brazil as they continue their South American tour.
