Angel Olsen has finally shared the title track of her forthcoming album, Big Time, out June 3 on Jagjaguwar. The track fully embraces Olsen’s country music inclinations after playing around with the style on other projects. “Big Time” is an unapologetic love song with warm lyrics propelled by her enchanting voice.
The accompanying video seeks to make a statement about the fluidity of gender identity and subvert the expectations imposed by the gender binary through the video’s choreography, color, and wardrobe choices. The cinematic video was directed by Kimberly Stuckwisch and choreographed by Monika Felice Smith. According to a release, the video seeks to hold space for existence outside of strict gender roles to “shout to the world that you are more than who you are told to be.”
“‘Big Time’ is what happens when we do not express our true identity but find freedom when we step out of the shadows into our most authentic selves,” Stuckwisch said. “In the first rotation, the lighting is drab, the clothes are monochromatic, the dance is monotonous . . . gender-conforming roles present. However, with each rotation, something magical happens, both our cast and Angel begin to come alive, to feel free. We see the clothes brighten, the dance heightens, and the bar that was once devoid of emotion can barely contain the joy bursting out of each individual.”
According to Stuckwisch in a release, 80% of the cast and 50% of the crew working on the video identify as nonbinary and/or gender non-conforming.
Olsen will embark on The Wild Hearts Tour with Sharon Van Etten, Julien Baker and Spencer this July and continue touring in Europe this fall. Tour dates are listed below.
