Foals released their newest single “2am” in anticipation of their upcoming album Life Is Yours, following the release of their last single “Wake Me Up.” “2am” is an energetic pop tune that lives to be played in cars and through loud speakers. This single shows Foals taking a refreshingly upbeat direction. The clean guitar sound glides through the track on an infectious beat that creates a classic summer pop song.

While this single is definitely danceable, the lyrics tell a much drearier story of repeated self-destruction. Frontman Yannis Philippakis states, “Musically “2am” is one of the poppiest songs we’ve ever written. It’s about repetitive cycles of destructive behaviour, which I think lots of people can relate to, and certainly it’s an expression of something that I struggle with. There’s something cathartic about expressing that feeling to this upbeat music that’s got a sense of release and the hope of resolution.”

Much of their upcoming record is inspired by a theme of escapism. As much of Life Is Yours was written in the bleak winter of 2020, the band sought much-needed escape through their music. The sleek and shimmering single “2am” offered the group a bit of hope in an otherwise dark time.
