Giants Chair’s 2020 Summer Playlist

With everyone sequestered and self-quarantining due to the coronavirus, we’ve asked our favorite artists to come up with playlists that keep you entertained. Here is Kansas City emo band Giants Chair.

Staying safe in the COVID era doesn’t have to mean playing safe when it comes to your sonic elixirs! Here’s a reckless playlist of unapproved (but nevertheless highly-effective) tunes we here at Giants Chair International Unlimited for Good And Pleasure are hunkering down & out with.

“Lost in the Cold Sun” – Earthless
Epic stoner rock instrumental that reminds me how much I wish I could really play guitar while stargazing into the summer woods behind my house. Did I already say epic stoner rock? Anyway… (Scott)

“Dayvan Cowboy” – Boards of Canada
Perfect deep-trip grooves and haunting melody warps for driving around the COVID-ravaged Midwest in the family Escape. (Scott)

“American Crisis” – Bob Mould
Absolute straight-up, NOW, socio-political power-rock. Timely AND (unfortunately) timeless in message and feel. Hope you don’t need your face anymore – I, for one, look better in my mask. (Paul)

“Runnin’ With the Devil” – Van Halen
Maybe it’s only an ankle-deep baby pool on the deck, but my “poolside” reading of late has been the Van Halen tell-all by their Roth-era manager, Noel Monk, of same title as this song. And it just ain’t Summer without some early VH either way. (Scott)

“Semi-Crazy” – Junior Brown ft. Red Simpson
After another tough day (of nothing much at all) when, regardless of genre, I can’t face anything more serious than, well, truckin’ songs, I’ve been appreciating this fun. (Scott)

“Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles” – Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Another welcome mind-wipe these days, I’m currently loving the Clear Spot album. This song pulls me into its distance every lovely time! (Scott)

“Let’s Get Lost” – Ex-Acrobat
Yes, they’re from our town. Yes, they’re our friends. And, yes, this song is wondrous. Sounds like summer to us – like it did last winter. (Byron)

“Fort Greene Park” – Battles
Well, shit. (Byron)

“Checkmate” – Hot Snakes
More of the same full-frontal “bad-time-as-good-time” action from THESE guys! It’s their world, we just die in it. (Paul)

“Better Wings” – Messthetics
This song somehow makes me feel small, smart and beautiful all at once – and that will give you goosebumps. (Scott)

“Big Exit” – PJ Harvey
I feel like this is a song I’ve been trying to write for years now, but doubt I’ll ever come close to its shadow. So heartbreakingly efficient and simple, but so rocking. It makes me cry. (Scott)

“Broken Wrists” – Cloak/Dagger
Just full-on punk-ass energy with a little something extra cool in the guitar stuff, if you ask me. (Scott)

“The Ecstasy of Gold” – Ennio Morricone
Great for grilling! (Paul)

“Knife” – TV Freaks
No toilet paper? Here, try a knife wrapped in sandpaper! But seriously, folks… (Byron)

“Letting Go” – Wild Nothing
Ok, so I like dream pop, too. For that, I’ve been going to these guys lately. This song is the title track off their latest album and I love it. (Scott)
