The newly reunited Bauhaus played their first gig in 13 years at the Hollywood Palladium on Sunday, November 3. Leave it to a legendary British goth band to time their reunion on the end of Daylight Saving, effectively ushering in the days when it’s pitch black out by 5 o’clock.
According to fan-shot video of the performance, the late ’70s/ early ’80s post-punk pioneers put on an incredible show. What’s all the more impressive is that frontman Peter Murphy seemed to be in top form despite suffering a heart attack in New York City this summer while there for a solo residency.
The setlist consists of the expected fan favorite tracks such as “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” (above), “She’s in Parties,” and the highly danceable “Kick in the Eye,” as well as covers of John Cale, T. Rex, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie tracks. As Stereogum points out, the band also played the song “Spy in the Cab” live for the first time since 1983, and “The Man With the X-Ray Eyes” live for the first time since 1982. The encore consisted mostly of covers and featured Bauhaus’s version of T. Rex’s “Telegram Sam” followed by their cover of Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust,” which is exactly how Murphy ended his sets during his 2013 solo tour, when he performed Bauhaus’s music for the band’s 35th anniversary.
Bauhaus is scheduled to take the Palladium stage again on Monday, November 4, and then again on Sunday, December 1. The gloom rockers haven’t announced any dates beyond that, but let’s hope they keep the tempestuous inter-band dynamics in check long enough to make it out to other cities.
