Billie Eilish sparked a rare bit of controversy following the March release of “Wish You Were Gay,” the fourth single off her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
The 17-year-old singer addressed the subject in an interview with PopBuzz, saying the song has been “a little bit misinterpreted” and that she had “tried so hard to not make it in any way offensive.”
“The whole idea of the song is, it’s kind of a joke,” she explained. “It’s kind of like ‘I’m an ass and you don’t love me. And you don’t love me because you don’t love me and that’s the only reason and I wish you didn’t love me because you didn’t love girls.’”
Despite the dust-up, the song peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has garnered more than 175 million streams on Spotify.
