Future-soul shapeshifter Neneh Cherry has released two new songs in the last 24 hours. The first, “Natural Skin Deep,” arrived via the Adult Swim Singles Series last night. The second, “Synchronised Devotion,” came out this morning. Both are pulled from her new album Broken Politics, the entirety of which was produced by Cherry’s kindred spirit Kieren Hebden, aka Four Tet.
“Natural Skin Deep” is a bouncy and upbeat sound collage, anchored by Caribbean air horns and minor-key steel pan before the bridge takes a surprise left turn toward cascading spiritual jazz. “Synchronised Devotion” is much lower-key, a drumless piano ballad with touches of vibraphone.
These songs follow “Kong” and “Shot Gun Shack,” the first two Broken Politics singles. Cherry’s previous album was 2014’s Blank Project, recorded in collaboration with the synth/drums duo RocketNumberNine and also produced by Four Tet. Four Tet himself recently released his ninth album New Energy and a live set largely comprised of material from that record.
